Overview

Micrsoft has made an important step to support the playback of MPEG-4 on Windows 8 RT and Windows 8 Pro. Windows RT has excellent support for MPEG-4, most typically comprised of H.264 video and AAC audio. Fragmented MPEG-4 and 2K/4K resolutions are also possible to playback on Windows RT. However, there is still limitation in playback of video in many formats. Windows RT still cannot play VOB, MKV, AVCHD MTS,FLV, RM, RMVB on Windows RT. And any device that run under Windows RT including Surface RT won’t support playback of VOB, MKV, AVCHD MTS,FLV, RM, RMVB either.

Since VOB, MKV, AVCHD MTS,FLV, RM, RMVB, etc are also not supported by Windows 8 Metro style app, to play these video formats, we will need to convert them to WMV for play in Windows Media Player on Windows RT devices (Such as Surface RT) or convert these video formats to H.264 MP4 to play in Windows Media Center or other Metro Style app on on Windows RT devices (Such as Surface RT).

MP4 to Surface – How to Successfully Play MP4 on Microsoft Surface or any Windows RT device

According to Microsoft, Windows 8 RT or Windows 8 Pro will support playing MP4 if it is coded with H.264 or MPEG-4 (Part 2). Any device including Surface with Windows RT or Windows 8 Pro will support play H.264 MP4 or MPEG-4 (Part 2).

As for H.264 MP4, Surface playback is limited to up to 10 Mbps with resolutions of 1920*1080, 30 frames per second; Baseline, main and high video profile (up to level 4.1); Audio profiles must be in AAC, 2-channel, Low Complexity. For MPEG-4 Part 2 video, Surface playback is limited to up to 5 Mbps with resolutions of 1280*720, 30 frames per second; Simple Profile and Advanced Simple Profile; Audio profiles must be in AAC, 2-channel, Low Complexity.

If the MP4 video does not meet the requested specification, such as MP4 with 5.1 AAC audio, the MP4 will either fail to add to Surface RT or Surface Pro or unable to play on Surface. Even some MP4 files can be played, sometimes there is no audio when video is playing or audio and video is out of sync.
